Executive Summary
The City of Walker Fire Department is a quality department with a
highly qualified administrative staff and dedicated paid-on-call
members. The department has established an excellent reputation in the
community. The fire department continues to experience the effects of
the City of Walker’s growth and has made significant changes to continue
providing quality fire protection during this growth period. Without
additional resources however, the department will continue to experience
challenges that will have adverse effects on the City’s fire protection
services unless these challenges are addressed.
A primary concern of the City of Walker Fire Department is providing
adequate response times to fire emergencies, especially during daytime,
weekday hours. The Walker Fire Department is not unique to this staffing
problem. Nationwide, volunteer and paid-on-call fire departments are
experiencing growing problems in recruiting and retaining members. The
problem is aggravated during weekday, daytime hours while the majority
of members are working at their primary jobs.
