Crime Highlights - December 2009

We were able to complete the annual food drive in December and deliver it in the community. Very special thanks go to Captain Long and the Walker Senior Volunteers who did so much of the behind-the-scenes work. They made this event happen in spite of a dramatic reduction in donations on top of less available personnel able to assist with the effort. When all was said and done we still managed to help over 100 needy families in our community.

Shortly after the food drive was completed we were saddened to learn that Senior Volunteer Char Burns has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Char is a past recipient of a statewide volunteer award for the numerous hours she has served as a Walker Senior Volunteer. In spite of her previously undiagnosed health issues she continued to donate numerous hours this past year to our community.

A/Capt. Howe submitted the Walker Police Department for a traffic enforcement grant which is awarded via the Michigan Association Chiefs of Police and OHSP. The Walker Police Department was notified today (1-11-10) that we won the first place award of $3,000 for an agency our size (26-49 officers). The funds come with a stipulation that they must be used for traffic enforcement equipment. We are very grateful to A/Capt. Howe for completing the award winning entry of our agency and City.

Two armed robberies which occurred in the Standale area were closed by an arrest of the suspect. This case was presented to the Kent County Prosecutor’s office. Upon review by the prosecutor an armed robbery warrant was issued for the arrest of the suspect. The suspect has since been arrested and is in Kent County Jail awaiting court proceedings.

Patrol officers responded to a call that reported a "man down with a head injury and a possible gun involved." Investigation revealed that the suspect had earlier in the morning purchased the rifle. He then returned to the apartment and shot himself with the rifle. While searching the apartment a suicide note was located. The Medical Examiner ruled the death suicide by rifle.

Officers responded to a home invasion back in August after the home owners returned from a funeral service and found that jewelry was stolen from their home. In November Muskegon County investigators contacted our Detective bureau because they recovered a class ring that was property belonging to the homeowner that suffered the August home invasion. Two suspects were in custody for several home invasions from June - September 2009. They were dubbed the "pillow case burglars" in the media. Both suspects were interviewed at the Muskegon County Jail and one confessed to the Walker home invasion. The second suspect did not confess, but was implicated by his co-defendant. Both men were charged in Kent County and appeared in court in December for their preliminary exams. Both suspects waived their preliminary hearings in order to preserve a plea deal or a package deal with their crimes in other counties.

During December an underage decoy was taken to several locations in Walker to attempt to purchase alcohol. A business located on Wilson Ave N.W. sold to our decoy. The clerk was issued an appearance ticket for selling the alcohol and the business is being cited through Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC).

The quarterly Neighborhood Watch meeting was held during December. Several Neighborhood Watch block captains were presented with a ball cap identifying them as such. The caps were left over from a bulk purchase that had been made a few years ago and the deserving recipients had all served for several years in their neighborhoods.

Training: No training was scheduled for the month of December.

Volunteer Patrol: 236 hours of patrol hours logged….71 hours of "other events"

Chaplains: Rev Baker assisted with a death notification which initially was thought to be a homicide. It was deemed a suicide by the medical examiner. All pastors attended multiple community and department related meetings.

Directed Patrols:

  • Vinecroft for truck route violations. No violations have occurred or been observed. This DP has been closed.
  • The speed board has been over at the garage getting cleaned and the rust painted inside the battery box. Once that is done it will be put into storage for the winter.
  • Non-Traffic

    Residential Property checks

  • There were (4) new property checks completed in December. There was nothing unusual located during these checks.
  • Catherine Garcia-Lindstrom

    Chief of Police
